State and R&D Opportunities of U.S.Egg Industry and the Role of Egg Industry Center(EIC)

【摘要】:Over the past 50 years, egg production in the United States has undergone drastic evolution in terms of bird genetics, dietary nutrition, housing equipment, environmental control, and management practices.Advancements in these areas have led to a much more efficient production of the wholesome egg while markedly reducing the amount of resources input, hence less environmental footprint. For instance, the U.S.egg industry‐wide survey and analysis being conducted by the Egg Industry Center reveals the following preliminary results.Compared with the pullets(i.e.,young hens before start laying eggs)raised in 1960,pullets of 2010 have about 50% lower cumulative feed use,67% lower cumulative mortality, and 30% lighter body weight at the onset of lay.For laying hens, the 2010 hens,as compared to the 1960 counterparts, have about 30% higher hen‐day egg production,27% less feed use,53% lower mortality,45% better feed conversion, and 84% fewer discarded eggs.A life cycle analysis of these advancements on the impact of environmental footprint is ongoing, but the preliminary results show remarkable reductions in carbon footprint(GHG emissions),eutrophication/acidification emissions and cumulative energy demand for modern egg production.
