The Doomed Female Characters

贾兴蓉
【摘要】:Edna,Olive and Verena,in the writings of a female South writer and a male North writer, show us their life and stories from different perspectives and various degrees in the background of the American feminist movement.Edna at the end of The Awakening,"did not look back now."Olive,at the end of The Bostonians,"rush to the front"of the Boston Music Hall saying that"I am going to be hissed and hooted and insulted!"Verena who came to the street with her lover Basil,"was in tears"although"she was glad"for"it is to be feared that with the union, into which she was about to enter, these were not the last she was destined to shed."The three female characters-one dies in the end,one enters into the chaotic and noisy hall alone and the other again gets controlled by a male chauvinist-leave much to be considered by readers and critics.
