Metaphors in The Great Gatsby: A Cognitive Poetic Approach

【摘要】：This paper examines metaphors in The Great Gatsby with a cognitive poetic approach. It aims to address two research questions below:(1) How are conceptual metaphors utilized in The Great Gatsby?(2) How are multimodal metaphors employed in The Great Gatsby?The present paper finds that both conceptual metaphors and multimodal metaphors are used concerning characters, objects and colors in The Great Gatsby, which account for themes and characterization in the novel. Those findings demonstrate that the cognitive poetic approach to metaphors is of great significance to the interpretation of The Great Gatsby and may offer insights into further analysis of the fiction.
