Level of Detail Technique for Plants
【摘要】：正Realistic modelling and interactive rendering of forestry and landscape is a challenge in computer graphics and virtual reality. A new development in plant growth modelling, simulation, visualization and application is plant models faithful to botanical knowledge, which represent the complex structures of a real plant and the function inside a real plant. Complex geometry and material of a large group of plants is a big burden to a high quality computer, and they often overwhelm the numerical calculation power and graphic rendering power. In order to accelerate the rendering speed of a group of plants, software techniques are often developed. For plant sparse organs, i. e. leaves, flowers or fruits, our approach is simplification of all sparse organs at the same time, i. e. , LOD and multi-resolution models for plants. In this paper, the principle and construction of plant simplification are explained, and they are used to construct LOD and multi-resolution models of sparse organs of big trees. This is the technique of plant LOD models, deduced from the basic knowledge of plant architecture. One example on a big poplar tree is shown of the effect of the LOD technique for a single big tree. Another example on a sweeping willow tree is used to show the application of LOD technique for view-dependent models. The last example is on virtual environment of 184 trees to prove the effect of LOD models with realistic rendering of virtual scenery. All these show that LOD can be an efficient technique to simplify the date complexity but to keep original visual complexity of plant community.
