【摘要】:正The talk will focus on the tensions between the changing financial model for public universities in the U.S.and the impact of that support on the university's service to the broader public. Drawing on examples from UW-Madison,I will explain the shifts in funding models, the extraordinary opportunities in pubic-private partnerships, and the challenges that result from increased dependence on private philanthropy and corporate support.Among those challenges, access and affordability,curiosity-driven research, and liberal arts education, and a changing world of work are the most urgent. How do we manage the apparent tensions among competing definitions of the"public good"and contradictions between a changing financial model and a commitment to addressing national and global needs?
