【摘要】:正An age-old concern in stylistics has been the concept of creativity in language,and specifically the ways in which the resources of language are imaginatively exploited in literary discourse.A number of significant recent publications have re-visited this issue(Attridge 2004; Carter 2004;Pope 2005) and have offered new and illuminating perspectives on how creativity informs our understanding of language and literature.Without detailing the findings of these publications in any depth,this paper builds on this general trend by suggesting ways in which the notion of creativity can be expanded and developed even further.To this effect,the paper raises three main areas for debate,areas which,it is suggested,have been largely neglected in the recent scholarship.The first of these concerns the status of non-standard dialect where it is argued (specifically with reference to Irish-English) that the varieties of language that are used by native speakers of English make for a special and often overlooked creative resource.Second,with particular reference to figurative language,creativity is explored in terms of how it bridges the disciplines of Stylistics and Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA).Whereas creativity in text is valorised in contemporary work in Stylistics,it is somewhat of a conundrum that in CDA,where it is seen as the insidious manipulation of text,creativity appears to be universally condemned. Finally,the paper examines creativity from a 'diachronic' perspective,introducing the concepts of irony,verbal humour and language change.It is suggested that the perception of creativity alters over time and that productive analysis can be made of different interpretative paradigms that inform readers' and listeners' reactions to texts.
