Perceptual Analysis of Vowel Duration in Cantonese
【摘要】：正 There are three kinds of "vowel duration" in the Cantonese vowels. They are long, median and short. Their representation in the syllables are the open syllables CV: (consonant - long vowel), the closed syllables CV:C (consonant - median vowel -consonant) and the closed syllables CVC (consonant - short vowel - consonant) respectively. In this study, 1) the effectiveness of the "vowel duration" as a perceptual cue for identifying sounds in Cantonese; 2) the categorical boundaries (duration boundaries) of the long, median and the short vowels in Cantonese based on the perceptual results of the tested subjects; 3) whether "vowel duration" in Cantonese is a contrastive (distinctive) or redundant feature from the view of perception were investigated and 4) the Cantonese phonetic representation was reviewed from the view of perception in the use of phonetic symbols to represent different phonemes.
