Implementation of field phenotyping in crop improvement-above and below ground

【摘要】:Complex interactions between the genotype,environment and management greatly affect phenotypes in field experiments.Their quantitative analysis is an essential step in breeding efforts to increase crop performance.Hence,new approaches for studying both simple and complex traits,such as nutrient,water and radiation-use efficiency,under field conditions,must be developed.While controlled environment studies allow for high precision,field phenotyping poses challenges with respect to developing robust and user-friendly platforms for measurements in the dynamic,multifactorial target environments.Further advancement is essential in order to facilitate high-throughput screening linked to the dissection of the genetics of quantitative traits,particularly those related to yield components and stress tolerance.However,this requires close interaction between the various stakeholders and has to include a focus on creating research with value for the end-users.Complementary field phenotyping platforms have been developed at the University of Copenhagen,through continuous dialogue within private public partnerships between academic institutions,breeding companies and technology providers in Northern Europe,such as the 6 P and RadiMax projects.These platforms include PhenoField,RadiMax,and the use of unmanned aerial systems.PhenoField is a mobile,closed,multispectral imaging system applied in proximity field phenotyping.The various unmanned aerial systems(UAS) are equipped with true color(RGB),color-infrared(CIR),hyperspectral and thermal cameras used to obtain basic indices or estimate specialized parameters.And last but not least,the RadiMax facility is a premier large scale semi-field facility designed for screening for deep rooting patterns along a water gradient,in combination with in-situ root imaging.Specific image processing software solutions,standardized methods and pipelines for advanced data management have been developed to facilitate the successful implementation in stakeholder operations.Selected case studies will be presented.
