Developing high-throughput phenotyping platforms to dissect the genetic architecture of agronomical traits in crops

【摘要】:The advent of next-generation sequencing technology has caused a major impact on genomics in a short period of time.However,phenomics,a new discipline involving the characterization of the full set of phenotypes of a given species,still lags far behind genomics.We have developed a high-throughput rice phenotyping facility(HRPF) to monitor dozens of traditional agronomic traits related to morphology,biomass,yield of major crops including rice.Using genome-wide association studies(GWAS),we identified 141 associated loci for the 15 agronomic traits in rice,and 25 of which were linked to known genes.By using the HRPF,we conducted phenotyping of more complex traits such as drought resistance,and GWAS of the phenotypic data provided more complete genetic architecture of these quantitative traits compared to the traditional mapping results.Based on a performance evaluation of the HRPF and GWAS results,we demonstrated that the combination of the multifunctional phenotyping tools HRPF and GWAS can serve as valuable tools for studies of plant genetics,genomics,gene function verification,and genetic improvement of crops.Meanwhile,some of the phenotyping facilities developed completely by ourselves have been commercialized.
