The Variability of Male and Female Cocoon Filament at the Intraspecific Levels

【摘要】:Male-only rearing has long been sought in sericulture because males show superior economic characteristics,such as lower food consumption,stronger resistances and higher silk yield.Previous studies have shown that male silk and female silk differ in structures and properties.A deep understanding of this variation is beneficial to the male-only rearing.A larval stripe sex-linked silkworm variety,871,was used as experimental material,and the property and structure variability of male and female cocoon filament at the intraspecific levels was measured in present work.The results showed that the fresh cocoon shell ratio of male silkworm was significantly higher than that of female,and the cocoon filament was longer and thinner meanwhile.The investigation of the distribution of silk denier along its length proves that the size of the male silk is more uniform and the change in denier is smaller than that of the female silk.The thinner male silk has the better orientation of the crystalline region than female silk.Those features suggest that the male cocoon with better quality and potential to reel higher grade raw silk.However,there was no significant difference in cleanliness,neatness or mechanical properties of the raw silk produced by male and female cocoons respectively.Therefore,the main advantage of male-only breeding is mainly its superior economic characteristics,rather than excellent silk quality.
