Network Topology Probing and Delay Measurement

【摘要】：正 On this complicated maze-like Internet, in order to get to know a certain domain, two important factors must be held in hand. One is its topology and the other is the transmission delay in this domain. Traditionally, we use ping to probe an unknown domain. Through pinging every node in a network domain and utilizing its feedback, we outline the topology of a remote domain. However, this method is time-consuming and prone to err. Here this paper presents a faster method producing more accurate results, i.e., taking advantage of database MIB (Management Information Base) provided by SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and reading routing table on routers or hosts to probe remote domain topology. On this basis, a complete probing and measurement procedure has been sorted out to probe the topology of a given unknown domain and measure data transmission delay between nodes within the domain, using SNMP and ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol).
