The status of marine release programs (aquaculture-based enhancement) in north America, Europe, Oceania and south-east Asia and comparisons with those in China and Japan

【摘要】:A systematic literature review of over 500 documents on marine release programs published since 2000 was done to evaluate the current state of aquaculture based enhancement(ABE = restocking,stock enhancement and sea ranching) for commercial and recreational(= leisure) fisheries in North America,Europe,Oceania and southern Asia.Comparisons have been made with reviews and government information on ABE in China and Japan,where large-scale continuous( 300 billion released individuals from 2004 to 2015) have been practised for over three decades.Five broad categories of release programs were identified:(1) Enhancement to increase commercial yield and value;(2) Restocking to increase the spawning population of a commercial or recreational fishery;(3) restocking species for conservation;(4) Sea ranching – creating or maintaining a fishery by releasing individuals and harvesting them before they mature; and(5) releasing individuals to increase knowledge of the species and ABE system i.e.research releases.Teleosts,crustaceans,molluscs and echinoderms were the focus of most publications in North America,Europe,Oceania and south Asia.Research on teleosts and crustaceans was most numerous in all regions( 60%),except south Asia(~ 24%),where molluscs(41%),echinoderms(35%) and crustaceans(20.6%) were the dominant taxa in publications.China has implemented a large government initiative to promote research,investment and best practices in freshwater and marine releases,with a focus in marine waters largely on invertebrates,particularly penaeid prawns(~80% of releases in 2015).In other regions considered in the review,releases have been of a much smaller scale(millions of released individuals each year) and the focus of releases has been largely on species of recreational significance such as penaeid prawns(Penaeus plebejus,Metapenaeus dalli),and Mulloway(Agryrosomus japonicas) in Australia and Red Drum(Sciaenops ocellatus) and Snook(Centropomus undecimalis) in the United States.
