Faulkner's Reception in France and the Influence of Existentialism
【摘要】:This essay argues that Faulkner's positive reception in France was largely due to the predominance of existential themes in his works, which in turn garnered the early attention of modernist French scholars, writers, and translators. The French existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, though critical of Faulkner's metaphysic of time in The Sound and the Fury, still found much in Faulkner's writing worthy of praise. This essay surveys existential criticism on Faulkner's works, offers an explanation for its recent neglect in scholarship, and suggests that existentialphenomenological criticism is still highly applicable as a critical theoretical framework in which to approach the Faulkner canon.
