Aim at the utilization of aquatic organisms in space

【摘要】:正When humans establish permanent bases in space,it will be necessary to produce food,purify the water supply,regenerate oxygen from carbon dioxide,and process waste into usable resources by using physicochemical and biological methods.Controlled ecological life support systems(CELSS)are capable of performing these regenerative functions.The construction of hydro-biosphere module utilizing aquatic organisms,a part of the model of a CELSS,has a promising prospect.The utilization of aquatic organisms in CELSS can be divided mainly into 3 parts:1)cultivating phytoplankton for the oxygen supply,2) producing fish as protein source,and 3)using fish and shellfish for the recycle of the organic wastes.The plane payload bay experiments were conducted to analyze the effect of microgravity on fish behavior,and the strain of the fish that showed the characteristics suited for living under microgravity conditions are being preserved.Experimental equipment named Closed Ecological Recirculating Aquaculture System (CERAS)was developed and the fundamental data are being collected.Moreover,in order to simplify the food chain in a CERAS with limited space,energy,and labor,the feasibility of constructing a food chain of tilapia-phytoplankton was studied by investigating the on-growing and reproduction of tilapia Oreochromis niloticus with Spirulina platensis as a sole food source.It is initially in the world verified the feasibility of rearing tilapia solely on raw Spirulina.Potential ecological engineering applications in human's exploitation of the space or the harsh environment on the earth were also expected.
