Spectral Analysis of the Diphthongs in Peking Dialect

【摘要】：This study is a spectral analysis of the formant frequencies and formant movements of the diphthongs[ia,ai,ua,au,ie,ei,uo, ou,ye] that occur in open(C)V syllables in Peking dialect from both male and female speakers.The main findings are as follows.(i)Regardless of the type of diphthongs,formant undershoot is larger for the high vowel elements than the low or mid vowel elements of the diphthongs.(ii) Formant undershoot is more pronounced for the high vowel elements of the diphthongs[ia,ai,ua,au] with larger formant movement than those of the diphthongs[ie,ei,uo,ou,ye]with smaller formant movement.(iii) Formant undershoot is larger for the diphthongs[ai,au,ei,ou] in Peking dialect than those in Cantonese.And,(iv) the patterns of the formant undershoot for the diphthongs are similar in male and female speech.
